Pen pals are those people who correspond regularly through post mail or the World Wide Web. It is known that there are different clubs of pen pals that exist even today. Death row pen pals are also one of the clubs that exist. This unusual group of pen pals is prohibited in some places by law. The people that are on death row are condemned to die. These people await their execution in a prison or cellblock.
Death row pen pals correspond with the people in the outside world. These people may send letters through post mail or e-mail; they may even become friends. In return, the prisoners that are sentenced to death get sympathy mail form different people. Some people end up having an emotional bonding. The prisoners like to correspond with people that are out going, interesting and broad-minded. There may not always be an amiable correspondence between the prisoners and the people on the other side of the wall. Some prisoners that are sentenced to death may or may not have actually committed a crime. Some of these people may be innocent and are still sentenced to death in spite of insufficient evidence. In one incident, an innocent man had been sentenced to death. His pen pal had fought his case and won it. Hence, his sentence was removed and he was free.
In some states in the US, the system of death row pen pals is forbidden. A case has been filed against this system and it is still being fought at present. The system of death row pen pals helps to bring about awareness and it helps the prisoners to have an intimate relationship with people outside the prison. The people who involve them self in this club or system have to be serious. The prisoners write with a lot of enthusiasm and the people responding to the letters need to be as enthusiastic.
